Analysis of the futuristic novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Essay In the futuristic novel Fahrenheit 451, the author, Ray Bradbury, expresses several problems that influence the story. Many of these problems have to do with the behavior of the people in the twenty- fourth century society. One major problem is that firemen have been given the job of burning books in order to stop the spreading of ideas, and to cause all of society to reform and therefore be happy. Many people do not agree with this and they try hard to keep books alive, even though they may be killed for it. Guy Montag, who in the beginning of the story is a proud fireman, later doubts his job and joins those who preserve books. One person who teaches him about books is an old man named Faber who is a retired English professor. During a conversation between Montag and Faber, Montag states, Thats the good part of dying; when youve nothing to lose, you run any risk you want(pg. 85). What he means by this is that he is willing to risk his life to help save books for others to read and enjoy. However, Montags wife, Mildred, does not care for books as much as Montag because she knows books are illegal and she fears for her life. Mildred tells Montag how afraid she is by saying, They might come and burn the house and the family. Why should I read? What for? (pg. 73) Montag is upset when he hears this because he sees that there is a problem with burning books. Indeed there is a problem because books allow people to express themselves, learn, dream, and have fun. In a society such as the one found in Fahrenheit 451, people are not allowed to experience any of these things and they are less individual. Another problem found in Bradburys future is that some schools and businesses have been shut down simply because they encourage and promote reading and books. In the novel, books are made to be thought of as evil and are no longer produced. Book companies along with some schools and publishing agencies have been closed due to the ban of books. On page 75 Bradbury tells of the closing of schools by writing, The old man admitted to being a retired English Professor who had been thrown out upon the world forty years ago when the last liberal arts college shut for lack of students and patronage. pg. 75) This explains that Faber, along with others, lost their jobs because of books being banned and disallowed. Some books, such as the Bible, are even more illegal than others because they are scarce and promote thought, idea, and reason. It may be the last copy in this part of the world (pg. 76) is what Montag says about the Bible when he is reasoning with his wife whether or not to turn it in to the Fire Captain. He knows that the book is rare because of the closing of book production companies, and he wants to keep it. Another big problem with the novels society is that many people are angry, bored, and depressed because they have nothing to do. Many people, including Mildred, have caught on to taking sleeping pills and doing other things that harm the body just to stay occupied, and to not be upset. Montag confronts his wife about overdosing on sleeping pills by saying, You took all those pills in your bottle last night, didnt you. SCIENTISTS: UFO REPORTS MAY BE WORTH EVALUATING by Michelle Levander Mercury News Staff Writer For more than 50 years, UFO investigators have scoured the skies for signs of alien life--completely snubbed by the scientific community as cranks. But today, in the first independent scientific review of UFO evidence in nearly 30 years, scientists gave a faint nod in their direction by concluding that it might be worthwhile to evaluate UFO reports, marking a major and important shift in the eyes of some UFO investigators. What we need are more scientists looking at this area if we are going to get answers, said Peter Sturrock, the Stanford University physicist who convened the international panel of skeptical scientists. Sturrock assembled the group after being approached by New York philanthropist Laurance S. Rockefeller, the grandson of John D. Rockefeller and someone who reportedly has a longstanding interest in UFOs and psychic phenomena. Sturrock, whose Society for Scientific Exploration promotes the examination of ideas outside the scientific mainstream, hopes the panel's review of UFO reports, to be published today in the alternative Journal of Scientific Exploration, spurs more solid research in the arena. To be sure, after a rare meeting between scientists and UFO investigators, the scientific panel remained skeptical. Nevertheless, they said the scientific community's refusal to even entertain the analysis of such information has been counterproductive. The history of Earth science includes several examples of the final acceptance of phenomena originally dismissed as folk tales, such as meteorites and sprites, the report says. It may therefore be valuable to carefully evaluate UFO reports to extract information about unusual phenomena currently unknown to science. One UFO investigator was pleased with the findings. OPENNESS, EVIDENCE Mark Rodeghier, of the Center for UFO Study in Chicago, interprets the panel's greater openness as an important step to bring the world of science--which demands empirical evidence-- closer to that of UFO observers, some of whom believe they now know what aliens do during human abductions. Taking a break from the national Mutual UFO Network conference, Rodeghier said, It would be extremely important for us to know if aliens are visiting the Earth surreptitiously. I didn't expect in five days that they would change their mind completely. I think it's sufficient that they say the subject deserves study. For its review, the panel examined evidence such as a 1981 photograph of a silvery oval-shaped object set against the blue sky, taken in British Columbia--the photographer swears it was not a trick photo of a frisbee--and a 1965 report by two French submarine crews in Martinique of a large luminous object (that) arrived slowly and silently from the west, flew to the south...and vanished like a rapidly extinguished light bulb. The last time scientists took a serious look at UFOs was in 1968, when Dr. Edward U. Condon, director of the Colorado Project, undertook a two-year study sponsored by the Central Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Air Force. His dismissive conclusion: Nothing has come of the study of UFOs in the past 21 years...and further extensive study of UFOs probably cannot be justified... Already some of this panel's scientists are steeling themselves for ridicule from peers. I haven't gone around and advertised I've done this. I thought I'd wait until our report came out and then let them take their jabs then, said Thomas Holzer, senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Still, he adds, he shares the panel's view that more openness is needed. NATURAL PHENOMENA Some UFO reports, the scientists concluded, could be explained by rare natural events such as sprites, or what appear to be huge sheets of light moving upward from cloud decks caused by electrical activity high above thunderclouds. Unusual radar patterns that UFO investigators interpret as flight patterns of alien craft are likely radar echoes caused by refraction in the atmosphere, said panel member and Stanford professor Von Eshleman, who studies the structure of the atmosphere through experiments on U.S. space missions. Hemingway vs. Faulkner writing styles Essay

Throughout time, individual authors have crafted varying writing styles that portray the authors themselves and helps the reader to better understand the tone of the piece. During the early twentieth century, the upcoming of a new America created many talented writers that varied drastically in style. An author may choose to write in a realistic manor, such as Ernest Hemingway or William Faulkner. From the post Civil War era in which Faulkner was accustomed, to the early 1920s era of Hemingway? s short stories, both authors’ focus remains on a similar topic. Both authors were realist writers who expressed their concern with the changes happening in America. However, the writing styles in which Hemingway used, compared to Faulkner, show many differences. By comparing the styles of Hemingway and Faulkner, readers find a contrast in the authors’ use of sentence structure, word choice, and character development; but overall, they achieve a similar tone. In many of William Faulkner’s short stories, such as â€Å"Barn Burning†, the sentence structure is complex; he describes vividly what is happening by including small details about characters and setting others may find insignificant. Faulkner uses long, complex sentences that contain hyphens and colons to continue his ideas throughout the sentence. In â€Å"Barn Burning†, Faulkner writes â€Å"Now he could hear his father’s stiff foot as it came down on the boards with clockwise finality, a sound out of all proportion to the displacement of the body it bored and which was no dwarfed either by the white door before it as though it had attained to a sort of vicious and ravening minimum not to be dwarfed by anything†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . Faulkner commonly uses great detail to describe even the simple sound of the father’s faulty footsteps. Much of detail is unnecessary but adds effect to the sentence. Hemingway, compared to Faulkner, uses short sentences to complete his thoughts. His ideas are expressed bluntly, but the point is clear. Both authors use sentence structure to complete an overall tone in their writing. Both authors achieve a similar tone using sentence structure. Faulkner uses long, detailed sentences to add to the effect of his stories. Hemingway uses short, blunt statements to set the tone. Many of the two author’s stories end with the same sad tone. The sentence structure the authors use can carry  tone throughout his story as they wish. The word choice of an author determines how a reader interprets the story. William Faulkner uses more complex words than Ernest Hemingway. In Faulkner’s stories, the words he chooses often are symbolic in a way. In â€Å"A Rose for Emily† Faulkner writes â€Å"†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬  The word choice in the sentence sets a tone for the story. The word choice Faulkner uses often make up the complex sentences in his stories. Hemingway’s word choice is less complicated. His ideas are expressed bluntly through his words. It is easy for the reader to understand Hemingway’s stories without further interpretation.

She is wife, a mother of two boys, and an educator to young adolescents. Using the outline questions that assignment two provided, I was able to complete an interview with Ms. Murphy and have the following conversation about her paid and unpaid work. I took notes throughout the interview and listened attentively. Ms. Murphy’s paid work consists of teaching young children at a local junior high school. Her daily routine involved planning lessons and teaching the lessons. â€Å"I do the best I can to have students meet essential outcomes† (Murphy). Ms. Murphy is a very dedicated educator, and is always willing to help children before and after school, assisting them in understanding the course material. Ms. Murphy strives to promote a welcoming classroom and a safe learning environment so that children are comfortable in asking questions, enabling them to expand their minds. Ms. Murphy also attends meetings with her peers in-regards to learning new strategies, knowing children have different learning styles. After Ms. Murphy’s long day of teaching, she also donates her time to chaperone daily school actives, and special monthly actives. Ms. Murphyà ¢â‚¬â„¢s paid work is from 8:30am-3:30pm, followed by unpaid work, for school which is 3:30pm-5:00pm.
